Las cuatro razas se encuentran muy equilibradas y ofrecen variaciones importantes, más que satisfactorias para complacer a diferentes tipos de jugadores. No hay una unidad más poderosa que otra, ni un conjunto invencible, además hay un extenso arbol de desarrollo para cada una de ellas que te permite alcanzar un buen numero de posibilidades.
Uno de los aspectos fundamentales en Warhammer 40.000 es la moral de las tropas, en el juego de tablero este factor tiene una gran importancia ya que puede afectar drásticamente a las tiradas de ataque y defensa, e incluso dejar inútiles a tus tropas. En Dawn of War, las partidas son mucho más rápidas por la naturaleza del género, por lo que la moral no ejerce un papel tan crítico, aunque sí afecta considerablemente a tus tropas. Si la moral baja, los ataques serán más imprecisos y los comandos serán presa fácil, aunque sólo algunas unidades son afectadas por la moral.
